Our Name

Fat Poppy to us, means big flowering. Essentially the very first stage of coffee growing is the ‘flowering’ stage. When coffee trees bloom, they are covered in beautiful tiny white coffee flowers (fun fact, that is actually their name – coffee flowers). Each coffee flower represents the birth of a coffee berry. After the coffee flower falls off, a berry grows in its place. Each berry grows two coffee beans. So, for farmers, a big flowering means a big crop year – lots of coffee! Our founder, Sasha, spent two years working on a coffee plantation, so was exposed to the importance of a big flowering. Coffee flowers almost bloom overnight. They are so small; they look like snow from a distance. To wake up to a big flowering is not only beautiful, but very emotional for farmers.

Our Commitment

It’s pretty simple: We Care. A lot. And we believe the more care you put into coffee, the more you get back. From caring about the people who grow our coffee, to the communities that enjoy it, to ensuring that quality, sustainability, and equality are upheld at every step in the process – it’s all important to us. All so you can enjoy a fearlessly good cup.
Yes. All of our coffees are ethically and sustainably sourced. Where we can, we source our coffee direct trade from producers and where that is not possible, we source our coffee through trusted partners. We pay a fair price for all of our coffees and ensure that the producers we work with pay a fair price to their employees too. And where we can, we reinvest in communities to produce better outcomes for them, and better coffee for you.
It’s the most important thing. Without great coffee, we can’t change the world. We’ve spent the past eight years working hard to master every little detail of every single process in the supply chain. This includes knowing who, how, and where all our coffee comes from, investing in projects that bring about good and ensuring our wholesale partners share the same values as us. It’s hard work! But it makes all the difference.
That would be Sasha, our founder. She’s an expert Q-grader (coffee taster), and personally selects all our coffees. From judging international coffee competitions, to travelling the world visiting suppliers, Sasha is Fat Poppy’s secret weapon.
Absolutely! We’re passionate about reinvesting in our communities, and especially fostering female leadership, both in and out of coffee. One of our favourites is our yearly fundraising for a program called Beyond Barbed Wire, run by Barnardos Australia. The program supports mums who have recently left prison to get back on their feet and reunite with their children. We love mentoring with the program, and donating coffee to the program’s coffee cart. We’re constantly mentoring, encouraging, and supporting other women and girls in business and beyond, because we believe female leadership improves outcomes for everyone. We like to support international communities as we know quality coffee can be an international effort, and we’re always looking for ways to use our privilege to empower communities abroad. Our founder Sasha has worked closely with farmers in the Philippines to improve their education and training. Teaching growers how to taste and evaluate their own coffee not only improves their economic outcomes and quality of life, but leads to a better coffee product for you. Fat Poppy has also reinvested profits in coffee-growing communities in Burundi, allowing them to buy new coffee seedlings and build sustainable business practices.

Compostable + Biodegradable Pods

Our pods are compatible with all original style Nespresso® coffee machines including but not only the following: Citiz, Lattisima, Lattisima Premium, Lattissima Plus, Le Cube, Pixie, Essenza, Expert, Maestria, U, Inissia, Creatista, Concept, Prodigio etc. Our pods do not fit the new Vertuo line of Nespresso® machines or commercial Nespresso® flat disc capsules.
Our coffee pods are made from our Hollywood Blend and Blackbird Blend. We actually can’t believe how similar it tastes to when it’s brewed through a coffee machine.

Our biodegradable and compostable pods are made from a plant-based composite. They are made entirely from sugarcane and sugar beet. This means that the complete pod, including the foil, is made from plant materials.
There are 10 pods in a box (53g).
After usage, you can throw the pod in your green council compost bin or your normal household bin.

Under the right industrial set conditions, they will fully break-down into compost. Our pods are hermetically sealed, with a plant-based oxygen barrier to keep our coffee as fresh as possible. This means that our entire pod can be chewed up, and spat out by our little microbial friends, leaving behind biomass, CO2 and water.

Putting your pods in your home compost depends on the variability of soil composition, temperature, humidity, and a heap of other factors.

We recommend a commercial facility, as under the right industrial set conditions, they will fully break-down into compost.
